Family Counseling

Frequently Asked Questions

How do we work together to raise our children after the divorce?

Parents form a relationship called Co-Parenting. It involves communication and decision-making about the children's needs and interests. Both parents share the responsibility of the children, as well as time with them. This relationship is a focus of the class "Helping Children Cope with Divorce".

    Are there agency quality guidelines?

Yes. Our Quality Assurance Coordinator, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), monitors the agency and its programs.

What is the cost of counseling?

Counseling fees are set by family income. Persons wanting to take advantage of the sliding fee scale must present proof of income at the time of the first appointment. Failure to provide this information will result in payment of the full fee.

    Does insurance pay for counseling?

In some cases, but not all, insurers will cover a portion of the costs associated with counseling. Our staff can check your particular company to ascertain coverage.

Who monitors the agency for quality assurance?

Our agency is reviewed on a continuous basis for quality assurance with information posted quarterly. The accrediting organizations with which we are affiliated conduct reviews and/or site visits on a regular basis. These organizations are the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families & Children, Inc., the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, Inc., United Way of Southwest Alabama, Inc., South Baldwin County United Way, Inc., the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the American Association of Suicidology, and the Alabama Coalition Against Rape.

    How long does counseling take?

Visits are 50 minutes in length. Appointments are necessary to reserve a time especially for you.

Will my personal information be shared with anyone?

Not unless you give us permission. In rare circumstances, the law may require us to share information.

    Is my record private?

All records are private to the extent permitted by law. Your written permission will be required to release information in most cases.

Is there any service that you do not provide?

We do not provide medication, psychiatric evaluations or any type of inpatient or partial hospitalization care. Alcohol and substance abuse problems may be referred to other providers if it is deemed in the client's best interest.

What are the effects of divorce on children?

Divorce can impact children emotionally, physically, and economically. The effects are described in detail in the class "Helping Children Cope with Divorce".

How do we tell our children about the divorce?

Whenever possible, both parents should be involved. The explanation depends on the age of the children but should be as simple as possible without blaming anyone for the divorce.

How can the effects of divorce on children be eased?

Parents cooperating with each other and positive support from parents, family and friends. This is described in detail in the class "Helping Children Cope with Divorce".

Is a referral required to receive counseling?

No referral is needed. You may choose your therapist or one will be selected for you.

What do I do if my "ex" will not cooperate?

Keep co-parenting as detailed in the "Helping Children Cope with Divorce" class, which involves not making excuses for the ex but not bad-mouthing them either.

What questions should I ask prior to seeking help anywhere?

Always ask if the agency and its programs are accredited and with whom, and if the therapists/counselors are licensed.
