The inception of the Family Counseling Center of Mobile, Inc. dates back to September 28, 1958, when it emerged as a distinct entity under the United Way Agency umbrella. However, its roots extend further as it evolved from two separate entities: the Travelers Aid Society, initially a service of the Mobile YWCA in 1917, and Child and Family Services, established in 1940 to cater to children's institutions in Mobile. Over the years, the center's focus expanded to encompass various facets of community well-being, including marital counseling, child guidance, delinquency prevention, and support for unmarried mothers.
As societal needs evolved, so did the agency's services. In response to community demands, Travelers Aid Services transitioned to the Salvation Army in 1984. In 1989, the Family Counseling Center of Mobile began offering services to those burdened by financial difficulties. Recognizing the growing scope of family issues, the center extended its reach beyond Mobile to surrounding counties, establishing satellite offices to better serve the region.
The period from 2000 to 2010 marked significant milestones for the agency. Strategic planning initiatives were implemented, culminating in successful fundraising events and strategic partnerships. The merger with Helpline and Rape Crisis Center in 2002 strengthened the center's financial stability and enhanced service provision. Fundraising efforts, such as the "Mother of All Silent Auctions," garnered community support, enabling the center to expand its programs and outreach efforts.
In subsequent years, the center continued to adapt and grow, forging partnerships with organizations like the Child Advocacy Center and securing funding for vital community initiatives. From suicide prevention training to pregnancy prevention programming, the center remained steadfast in its commitment to addressing emerging community needs.
Today, the Family Counseling Center of Mobile, Inc., operating under the Lifelines Counseling Services banner, stands as a beacon of support for individuals and families facing life's challenges. Offering a continuum of care from crisis intervention to skill-building, the center remains dedicated to fostering resilient families, nurturing successful children and young adults, and empowering individuals to lead fulfilling lives. Through counseling, assistance, referrals, and education, the center endeavors to strengthen the fabric of the community and promote holistic well-being across generations.
